Root Canal Treatment
  • I have an infected root canal
  • I have an infection under my tooth

Root canal treatment is the term given to the procedure that aims to save the natural tooth following tooth decay and infection of the pulpal tissue. It is sometimes referred to as endodontics.

Root canal treatment is the term given to the procedure that aims to save the natural tooth following tooth decay and infection of the pulpal tissue. It is sometimes referred to as endodontics. Following treatment, the tooth that the treatment has been performed on can survive for decades without the need for additional procedures.

Root canals are performed after the nerve tissue in a tooth is traumatised or exposed to bacteria, which can cause pain and inflammation. If the tissue dies it can result in bacteria leaking into the empty space, causing an infection that can lead to an abscess forming in the bone. Root canal treatment is undertaken to treat or prevent infection of the pulpal tissue, which is made up of connective tissue and cells at the centre of the tooth.

If your tooth pulp is infected you have two options, either a root canal treatment can be performed or the tooth can be extracted. A root canal saves the natural tooth and in the majority of cases is a successful procedure. The treatment can be completed by a general dentist or an endodontist, who has had additional training and experience in root canals.
The procedure involves removing the tissue and bacteria from the root canal system before cleaning and sealing the area. It will then be covered with a filling or a crown to provide additional protection. If you experienced bone loss as a result of a root canal infection, this treatment can result in the regeneration of the bone

Effective anaesthetics and a better understanding of the treatment means that root canal treatments are no longer painful. As a general rule, keeping the natural tooth through root canal treatment is better than tooth extraction and replacement through a dental implant or bridge. However, you should discuss your personal case with your dentist.

Through good oral hygiene and avoiding sugary foods most people can prevent the need for further root canal treatment.

The cost of root canal treatment varies depending on the extent of the damage to the tooth and the experience of the dentist. You can expect to pay between £120 and £750 for treatment.

I would highly recommend this dental practice, they have good prices and a lovely atmosphere. I was a terrified patient at the dentist my entire life, but since joining Longwood my phobia of the dentist has been cured. Dr. Ahmed and her team are so reassuring and kind making the whole experience so much more bearable. I was also treated by Dr. Peri who performed a root canal on me, he explained the procedure and was very gentle, I didn't feel a thing!
