Breast Implant Surgery

Breast implant surgery, otherwise known as a ‘boob job’, uses surgical procedures to alter the appearance of breasts, changing the size and shape using synthetic implants. This is a popular way for restoring the shape of the breasts after pregnancy or dramatic weight loss. It can also help to build new breasts for women who have had theirs removed while being treated for breast cancer. Patients who have one breast larger or smaller than the other can also correct them using breast implant surgery.

A breast lift procedure, or a ‘mastopexy’ is useful for restoring a youthful appearance to sagging breasts, and is often done in conjunction with breast implant surgery.

Breast implant surgery involves cutting the breast in order to insert an implant. This can be positioned either beneath the chest muscle or between the chest muscle and the skin and the placement depends on the amount of loose skin a patient has. Breast implant surgery can take around 90 minutes to complete.

During the surgery a single cut is made under the breast, following its natural curve and another incision starting at the nipple heading down towards the bottom of the breast. After removing any excess skin the nipple, or ‘areola’ is moved higher up, with the surrounding skin shaped to form a tighter, firmer breast.
After any kind of breast surgery you are often required to stay at the clinic for a minimum of half a day however, some may need to stay for a few days before they are discharged. 1-2 weeks should be allowed for recovery, before any normal activities can be resumed. A full recovery can take around six weeks.

Breast implant and breast lift surgery can improve the appearance of breasts, resulting in tighter, firmer, perky breasts. However, the effects of a breast lift can degenerate over time and external factors such as ageing, pregnancy, weight loss or gain and gravity can ultimately alter breast firmness, returning them to the condition they were once in prior to surgery. It is recommended that breast implants are also inserted when a breast lift is conducted so that the results can last longer.
