April showers or not - you need a good SPF Sunscreen...

Welcome to Spring!

As the glorious British Spring weather is currently battering the daffodils and cherry blossom outside as I write this, I realise that thoughts of sunny, warm days may seem a long way away! However, I still have to gently remind you all to WEAR AN SPF ALL YEAR ROUND, even when it feels like there is an Arctic chill in the air.

Whatever the weather, April showers or Spring sunshine, exposure to the sun’s rays can 'speed up’ the visible signs of ageing. Exposure to UVA and UVB rays contributes to pigmentation and formation of increased fine lines and wrinkles (as a result of reduced elasticity and a degradation in the overall condition of the skin).

However, prematurely aged skin isn't the only thing to worry about - it also has a much more sinister consequence – Skin Cancer. It's well documented that over-exposure to the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays can increase the risk of developing Skin Cancer.

This may sound like scaremongering, but trust me, I’m not trying to scare you! For me, education is integral to the happiness & health of patients who come to visit me for non-surgical aesthetic treatments. For me, it's essential to invest in a really good quality SPF product that you can wear all year round on exposed skin (such as the delicate skin on your face and neck) to protect it from sun damage. Wearing SPF – either within a dedicated broad spectrum Sunscreen, makeup or even a tinted moisturiser that contains a good quality SPF – is such an easy way to help ‘hold back the years’ when it comes to premature skin ageing caused by sun damage. I wish everyone would listen!

If you're looking for a new sunscreen, I can strongly recommend a couple of products:

1) iS Clinical’s ‘Extreme Protect’ SPF 30 - A broad spectrum sunscreen that combines anti-ageing technology with sun protection.

2) A product such as Lycogel ‘Breathable Tint’ - A tinted moisturiser with SPF 30, that can help provide a radiant and even complexion if you are specifically looking for high-quality.

So, even if it is raining sideways when you are reading this, please remember to incorporate a good quality SPF into your daily routine – YOUR SKIN WILL THANK YOU FOR IT!
