Sclerotherapy
  • I have varicose veins
  • I have unsightly spider veins

Sclerotherapy is carried out by either a doctor or a dermatologist who turns the vein into scar tissue, which will then fade over a period of time, giving the appearance of the varicose vein or spider vein having been removed.

Used for more than eight decades, Sclerotherapy is used to get rid of varicose and spider veins

Sclerotherapy is carried out by either a doctor or a dermatologist. It uses an injection into the site of the visible varicose vein or spider vein to cause a swelling and blood clot within the vein itself. By irritating the lining of the blood vessel with a special salt solution, Sclerotherapy turns the vein into scar tissue, which will then fade over a period of time, giving the appearance of the varicose vein or spider vein having been removed. This process takes between a quarter of an hour and 30 minutes to complete and a consultation will be required beforehand. This procedure is not suitable for all patients, especially those who have previously had a blood clot or are pregnant.

Sclerotherapy should not be painful but you will feel some discomfort or cramping when the injection is made. This will vary depending on the number and size of the veins to be treated.

Discomfort is mild and the recovery period minimal. You may notice a reddish colour or raised surface for a few days around the site of the vein after a Sclerotherapy treatment. Some people will also experience light bruising or itching for a day or two afterwards.

Sclerotherapy can be carried out by either a doctor or a dermatologist. While the treatment time is relatively short at just 15 – 30 minutes, the number of veins and thickness of veins must be taken into consideration. Your general medical condition and overall health will be considered before Sclerotherapy is carried out.

On average, a Sclerotherapy procedure will cost £200 per session.
