Sometimes, a woman can decide that she no longer wants her breast implants, and breast implant removal is performed whenever this is the case. Problems such as deflated or leaking implants and disappointment over the size or shape of an implant can be addressed with breast implant removal. Breast implants do not always need to be replaced if they are removed and a breast lift can be conducted to tighten any stretched skin if this is the case.
Breast removal surgery takes around two hours to complete, and patients are put under a general anaesthetic throughout the procedure. Existing breast implants are removed, often through the same incisions under the breast or around the areola that were made to place the implants originally. A breast lift is sometimes performed after an implant removal treatment, but this can make the total time in operation take longer.
Patients are taken to a recovery suite once the surgery is over, to be cared for while the anaesthetic wares off. Nursing staff will then monitor your dressings, pulse and blood pressure regularly to ensure your wellbeing once the procedure has been done. Painkillers are often prescribed in order to reduce any discomfort, and you may be asked to wear a support bra in order to keep the wound dressings in place and to aid your recovery. Your surgeon will advise you as to how long you must wear this bra, and you also must not wear an underwired bra until told otherwise by your doctor.
Discomfort, bruising, swelling and pain in the breast is common after breast implant removal, but these are temporary and will reduce in the first few weeks after surgery.
Your surgeon will advise you as when you can return to normal activities such as driving, but patients must not attempt to do so until any pain which may restrict your ability to perform an emergency stop has subsided. Strenuous exercise must be avoided for around four-six weeks following the procedure.
A specialist nurse will call patients a few days after they are discharged in order to monitor recovery progress. Depending on your type of employment, you may need to take one to two weeks off work.
Breast implant removal is usually carried out alongside a breast lift. This surgery is suited to those who want to reverse of revise a breast augmentation that was performed previously.
The cost of breast implant removal can differ, depending various factors such as whether or not implants are being replaced, as well as the particular clinic that is used. Prices start at £800 and can rise to £3,800
