Microdermabrasion - What is it? What does it do?

Microdermabrasion is a popular treatment at Appearance Based Medicine Ltd., often used in conjunction with other treatments (like the Fire and Ice Medical Facial) in order to boost the effectiveness of the procedure.  Recently I was asked why Microdermabrasion is such an effective treatment, so I thought it was about time we put together a blog on the topic!

As we age, not only does skin cell production begin to reduce, but so does the skin’s ability to effectively shed old skin cells.  As a result, the build-up of dead skin cells can leave the skin looking dull and lacklustre.  Microdermabrasion helps to clear away the top layer of old skin to reveal the younger, fresher looking skin beneath, as well as stimulating the fibroblasts deep within the skin to produce new collagen and elastin.  It involves the mechanical exfoliation of the skin to remove the upper layers (stratum corneum) in order to produce a refreshed and renewed appearance.

Microdermabrasion treatments take about 30 minutes to carry out, and involve the use of a small, handheld vacuum suction device and very fine abrasive crystals to polish and resurface the skin.  It is like an accelerated exfoliation, helping to promote the production of collagen and elastin and speed up cell production — things that all reduce as we enter our thirties, forties and beyond!  Microdermabrasion is an effective treatment for the treatment of acne, fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and the removal of blackheads and blocked pores, and is a great non-invasive way to achieve younger, firmer and clearer looking skin.  By clearing away this ‘barrier’ of old skin cells, topical treatments like iS Clinical’s Fire and Ice Facial are able to more efficiently penetrate skin’s pores, hence the popularity of using Microdermabrasion in conjunction with treatments like facials and skin peels.

After any ‘resurfacing’ cosmetic treatment, including Microdermabrasion, it is possible that your skin could feel quite tight or sensitive for a short time whilst you recover fully from treatment.  Microdermabrasion is a treatment that requires no ‘downtime’, so you can be back at work or carrying out your daily duties as normal as soon as you leave the clinic! In addition to this, there is an extremely low risk of any side effects occurring during or post-Microdermabrasion treatment.  For the majority of individuals, the most that they experience is mild redness that can last between 30 minutes and 12 hours after the Microdermabrasion treatment takes place, depending on the aggressiveness of the treatment.

Is your skin looking dull and lacklustre? If so, Microdermabrasion could be the treatment for you! Safe, painless, quick and effective, this is a great treatment to try if you are interested in learning more about non-surgical aesthetic treatments.
