It's NEVER too early to start caring about your skin!

Life is busy.  Every day there are 101 things to be thinking about, and it's easy to put your skincare regime to the back of the queue.  But please believe me when I say that it's never too early to start looking after your skin to help maintain a healthy condition and good texture as you get older.  Simple lifestyle changes like eating healthily, drinking plenty of water, exercising regularly and wearing sunscreen can have a beneficial impact on your skin, and these will also ensure that the physical signs of ageing are held off for as long as possible!

Even if skin laxity and deep wrinkles aren’t an issue for you yet, there are certain skin problems that can have a negative impact on your self-confidence – such as enlarged pores and acne scarring.  These issues can be successfully treated by some of the wide variety of non-surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures offered by Appearance Based Medicine. Our Fire and Ice Medical Facial, for example, was developed by the world-renowned pharmacologists and physicians at iS Clinical - and it was designed to bridge the gap between the more invasive chemical peel treatments and milder facials.  The ‘Fire’ part of the facial is an intensive resurfacing masque, which can be used on the face, neck, and décolletage.  It resurfaces the skin, deep cleansing blocked pores and reducing fine lines and wrinkles.  The ‘Ice’ masque is the pampering part of the facial, refreshing and cooling the skin after the initial peel and leaving the skin with a luxuriant glow.

Another treatment that is really effective at improving the texture of the skin and reducing the visibility of scars is the Dermapen Skin Needling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy.)  This treatment involves administering a topical local anaesthetic before introducing a series of fine, sharp needles into the skin.  The targeted “damage” caused to the dermis by the fine needles encourages the body to produce new elastin and collagen.  This treatment not only helps to reduce the appearance acne scars, but it's also proven to help reduce visibility of stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles, and skin laxity.

The texture of your skin isn’t the only thing that can cause problems as you age.  The pigmentation of the skin can be affected by over-exposure to the sun, pregnancy, and also as a side effect of the oral contraceptive pill.  A small portion of people who use the oral contraceptive pill notice the gradual appearance of skin discoloration and/or small brown patches, caused by the over-production of melanin by skin pigment cells – this is called ‘Facial Pigmentation’ or ‘Melasma’.  Repeated sun damage and the hormonal changes of pregnancy can also cause these brown patches to become more visible.  There are ways of reducing the appearance of these areas of hyperpigmentation though – don’t worry! If your Melasma is particularly severe, a product like iS White Lightening Complex could really help to reduce the visibility of the dark patches of discoloration in a safe manner.  It combines an innovative blend of pharmaceutical-grade botanicals and lightening ingredients in a unique formula that can effectively lighten and brighten the skin.

So, whilst we wouldn't want you to stay awake at night worrying about those laughter lines and the natural ageing process (we all need our beauty sleep!), it's definitely worthwhile putting a little time and effort into looking after your skin now, to ensure that minimal cosmetic intervention is needed in the years to come.  And if I could pass on one ultimate skincare tip to anyone, regardless of the current texture or condition of your skin, it is this – WEAR SPF EVERY DAY!! This one action, above all others, will really help to protect your skin both now and in the future.

Love the skin you are in - take care of it well!
