Dermapen Micro Skin Needling – the Science behind the treatment

Many of the treatments offered at Appearance Based Medicine are fairly self-explanatory: Dermal Fillers can help to restore areas of lost volume and enhance youthful definition; A PDO Threadlift does, to some extent, help to give an immediate and visible ‘lift’ to the treatment area (though the effects last far beyond the PDO Threads being absorbed by the body); Wrinkle Relaxing Injections can, when appropriate, help to temporarily block electrical signals between the brain and certain specific muscles that contract to cause dynamic facial wrinkles, helping to ‘relax’ or smooth the wrinkles. However, there are a few treatments that we provide that require a little more explanation.

One of the questions that I get asked quite a lot is ‘What does Skin Needling actually do?’ This is a perfectly valid question as even the name of the treatment suggests an uncomfortable or ‘damaging’ procedure, though the reality is that Dermapen Micro Skin Needling can be a highly effective treatment when it comes to reducing the appearance of:

Fine lines and wrinkles
Stretchmarks
Skin laxity
Scarring
So what happens in a medical Skin Needling Treatment? Dermapen Micro Skin Needling treatments involve the introduction of a series of fine, sharp needles into the skin following the administration of a topical local anaesthetic (designed to help reduce discomfort). The “damage” the needles cause to the dermis encourages the body to produce more new collagen and elastin, which prompts new skin cells to repair themselves.

Dermapen Micro Skin Needling treatments vary in duration depending on the size of the area being treated but generally take less than an hour to complete. As the name suggests, the procedure does involve the use of very fine micro needles, so patients tend to report some mild discomfort during the procedure (we use a topical anaesthetic to help reduce this). Skin can look a little red and mildly inflamed post-treatment, and can also bleed a little, though the effects are fairly short term, with the majority of the visible signs of treatment fading within 24-48 hours. In rare cases, patients can experience longer lasting minor side effects from this treatment, including dry skin, scabbing of the treatment area, hyperpigmentation, and cold sore flare-ups (if you have a history of this condition).

I generally advise patients that it can take 4 to 8 weeks before visible signs of skin regeneration can be seen and that, for the most dramatic results, a series of up to 5 treatments (each spaced 8 to 12 weeks apart) is often required.

Despite the fact that Dermapen Micro Skin Needling is an extremely safe treatment for the vast majority of patients, I insist that every customer interested in a non-surgical aesthetic treatment from Appearance Based Medicine Ltd. comes to me for a pre-treatment consultation prior to undergoing any procedure. This helps me to establish not only that a treatment is a safe option for a patient, but also whether or not they are likely to see the results that they want to from the particular treatment that they are interested in.
