Is it common during ortho treatment for my teeth to get worse before better?

An orthodontic patient asks Dr Sunil Hirani a valid and quite common question:

Hi, I am a couple of months into ortho treatment but my teeth look worse than ever, I’m a little embarrassed to question my dentist but should I?
Kind regards
Stewart

'During orthodontic treatment it is very common to get worse before you get better. The same thing would hold true for any surgical procedure as well.  It is only at the end of the intended treatment do you appreciate what has truly happened. It is always sensible to speak to your orthodontist before forming judgements as your understanding of the biological processes may be limited. During treatment the patient needs to be flexible and patient.'
