Dr Johal is a Reader and Consultant at Barts and the London Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Dentistry and is a member of the British Sleep Society. He is one of the leading clinicians in the UK on the subject of the use of mandibular advancement splints for Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, has lectured extensively throughout the UK at BDA and Section 63 events and internationally. Over the last 10 years he has presented his lecture titled 'Snoring and Sleep Apnoea - A Role for the GDP' to over 2000 dentists. These dentists are now fully trained in line with General Dental Council and their defence organisation guidelines to provide mandibular advancement splints for Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
Dr Johal has been involved in much of the UK clinical research into the effectiveness of mandibular advancement splints and has had numerous published research papers in this field. With over 15 years of clinical and research experience in this field, he has been awarded numerous national and international prizes including the Belle Maudsley Prize for his paper looking at 'The Relationship between Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and Dentistry'; Gunter Russell Research Poster Award by British Orthodontic Society 'Responses to mandibular protrusion in subjects with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea' and The Arnold Huddart New Researcher Medal by The Craniofacial Society of Great Britain for 'The Orthodontist's contribution to the management of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
