A chin implant is ideal for those that want to create a strong chin structure and add facial definition. The treatment can be used to balance facial features and help the overall appearance of the face seem more in proportion. In some cases, the treatment is desired because of the effects of ageing, which can result in the chin receding and jaw line definition decreasing.

Contouring the chin area with chin implants can also give a more youthful appearance by reducing the look of jowls and sagging skin around the jawline, improving the profile of the face. A chin implant can be used to give temporary or permanent results and can be conducted in conjunction with other facial plastic surgery to lift and refresh the whole face.

In order to add a chin implant your cosmetic surgeon will need to make incisions, these can either be on the sides of the lower lip or inside the mouth. Through these incisions a ‘pocket’ is created where the implant can then be placed to add definition. The incisions are closed up using either dissolvable or removable stitches depending on where the cuts were made.

Following the surgery, it is normal to experience some discomfort and difficulty moving your mouth as you recover and get used to the implant. Within a week you should notice a reduction in the swelling and bruising but numbness may continue for several weeks after the surgery has been completed.

There are several different options for choosing your chin implant and the material you select can affect the final look. Your surgeon should discuss the options with you in order to find the right one for you. Preformed chin implants, such as those made from silicone or GORE-TEX, resemble a chin guard and the cosmetic surgeon may alter the implant to tailor it specifically to your face. Once in place and the swelling has subsided, the aim of the implant is to complement your natural face shape while creating a strong, defined jawline.

The treatment is typically used to either add fullness to a receding chin or to alter the overall face shape in order to achieve a better balance. Many patients choose to combine a chin implant with other facial cosmetic procedures, such as a face lift or nose reshaping, to create a look that boosts their confidence.

The cost of chin implants varies depending on the type of implant selected but you should expect to pay between £1,500 and £3,000.
