Electrolysis uses a very fine medical probe to permanently remove hair. It does this by destroying each individual hair follicle, so that new hair cannot grow. Electrolysis is a popular form of hair removal for sensitive areas of the body such as the breasts and is commonly used to remove unwanted facial hair, including on the chin and upper lip. It can also be used on other areas such as the underarms and legs.
A sterile probe around the same width as a single human hair is used to destroy the hair follicle. No needle or breaking of skin is required as the probe is inserted directly into the follicle, which acts as an opening in the dermis. The probe is heated, sealing the hair at the root before it is removed. A number of treatments may be required to totally remove the unwanted hair, but with each session the rate of hair growth will gradually deplete.
Electrolysis works on hairs in the growth stage so a number of sessions will be needed to completely remove the hair. While one hair is growing, another may be in the resting or shedding stage so multiple electrolysis applications will be needed.
Between 90- 93% of those undergoing electrolysis report permanent hair removal following a full course of treatment. A small number may experience a light re-growth but as the probe destroys the hair follicle, there is no way for new hair to grow.
The cost of electrolysis is normally based on the duration of the treatment, with typical sessions lasting 15, 30 or 60 minutes. A 15 minute procedure will cost £15 - £20, with 30 minutes averaging £26 - £30.
