Why DO wrinkles appear??

As we age, the production of elastin and collagen – the main structural proteins in tissue that give it volume and shape and allow it to ‘bounce back’ after it has been stretched or contracted – starts to reduce, and existing collagen and elastin begins to deteriorate.  The rate of new skin cells being produced also begins to slow, as does our skin’s ability to effectively shed old skin cells, and skin can appear duller and drier than it was previously.

It’s not just the natural ageing process that causes the structure of the skin to deteriorate – exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can contribute to the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.  Long-term UV exposure doesn’t just lead to an increased risk of skin cancer and pigmentation, but can also contribute to an overall degradation of skin texture and reduced skin elasticity.

A reduction in the levels of Hyaluronic Acid in the body as we age can also contribute to an overall loss of elasticity and volume, as Hyaluronic Acid – a molecule that binds with water to ‘plump’ up cells with moisture – helps to add youthful volume to the skin, making it a popular ingredient for dermal fillers and also topically applied cosmetics.

Fine lines and wrinkles can be effectively treated in a number of ways - and not just by dermal fillers and wrinkle relaxing injections.  There are a number of treatments that can help to encourage increased production of collagen and elastin – the ‘scaffolding’ that helps to give skin it’s shape and elasticity – in certain areas of the body.  These treatments include Dermal Needling, PRP Therapy, and PDO Threadlift treatments, where carefully targeted “damage” to the dermis stimulates the production of these important proteins.
