Dermamelan treatment for pigmentation problems

What is Dermamelan?

Dermamelan is treatment for pigmentation problems. Hyperpigmentation (also called chloasma or melasma) is seen as brown or discoloured areas of skin, often as ‘blotches’ on areas of otherwise normal skin colour or ‘lentigo’, which are more sharply defined small brown spots. Chloasma can be caused by hormonal changes, exposure to the sun, certain medications, and skin conditions such as acne. It’s also a common consequence of ageing as ‘liver spots’ or age spots.
Dermamelan is a depigmentation treatment designed to tackle these problem areas of pigmentation, and it can also improve the texture of the skin, reduce pores and help reduce acne scars.

How does Dermamelan work?

Dermamelan is a tyrosinase inhibitor. Tyrosinase is an enzyme essential for the production of melanin, which causes pigmentation. Dermamelan contains retinyl palmitate, arbutine, phytic acid, ascorbic acid, titanium dioxide and kojic acid, and these chemicals work to block melanogenesis, the process that produces melanin.

What is involved in Dermamelan treatment?

Your Dermamelan treatment will take place in two stages.

In the first stage, you will receive an intensive treatment in clinic. Your skin will be prepared for treatment by applying an alcohol based solution that removes sebaceous secretions from your skin and assists the infiltration of Dermamelan. The Dermamelan cream mask is adjusted according to your individual needs and medical history, and shouldn’t irritate your skin. Once it’s applied it must be left in place for between 8 and 12 hours, and usually you will leave the clinic after application. This means it’s best to have your treatment in the morning, as you can’t sleep with the cream mask on, and you will also need to arrange transport home.

While the Dermamelan mask is on you should be careful not to expose your face to direct heat. At the end of the treatment period, you should gently remove any excess and wash your skin.

Most people will only have the stage 1 intensive treatment once, but in severe cases they may return a fortnight later for a second intensive treatment.

In the second stage, after allowing a few days for your skin to settle you will continue your treatment at home by applying a Dermalean maintenance regime every day, usually for several months. This typically consists of a reducing schedule, beginning with three daily applications and reducing to just one application daily after a few months.

Are there any side effects of Dermamelan treatment?

Dermamelan is generally a very safe treatment, but you may experience some minor side-effects. Your skin may flake or peel during the first week and depending on the severity, which varies from patient to patient, you may wish to take a few days off work while this settles. Your skin may also be red and feel tight for a day or two after your stage 1 treatment, and sometimes for a few days after you start your maintenance treatment, but this usually settles.
