Penile augmentation surgery is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to increase the length and girth of the penis.
There are many pills, potions and devices touted on the internet which claim to enhance what nature gave you, however there is no clinical evidence to back up these methods. If you are looking for a permanent solution to increase the size of the penis, the only successful way of altering the size and shape is through a surgical procedure.
What is penile augmentation?
Penile augmentation or penis enlargement, also known as penoplasty or phalloplasty, can be divided into two procedures; surgery to increase penis length and surgery to increase penis girth.
What is involved in penis enlargement?
Both procedures are normally done under general anaesthetic and can take up to 4 hours.
Increasing penis length usually involves cutting the suspensory ligament (the ligament that attaches the penis to the pubic bone), which makes more of the penis visible outside the body. Then a skin graft is performed at the base of the penis to cover the extended length (although this isn’t so much extended length as ‘freshly revealed’ length). This procedure makes a maximum of 2cm difference to the flaccid penis length, but has no impact on erect penis length.
Often, surgery to increase penis girth involves injections of dermal tissue or fat (removed from your abdomen or thighs by liposuction) into the dartos fascia, under the skin of the penis. Some surgeons use implants of synthetic materials such as silicone instead. A new method, which involves pulling back the skin of the penis to insert a biodegradable frame, is still in its infancy and not widely available.
How long will it take me to recover from penis enlargement?
You will need bed rest for two weeks following the surgery and there will be swelling and discomfort. Medication is usually given to prevent erections and allow the penis a chance to heal. Strenuous activity and sex must be avoided for six weeks and you will need three to four weeks off work to recover. Depending on the procedure, various dressing and weights may need to be applied to ensure a successful result.
What are the risks of penile augmentation?
Besides the risks associated with general anaesthetic, as with all surgery there are the twin risks of bleeding and infection. There is also is a risk of nerve damage and a poor cosmetic result. Additional risks and after-effects with lengthening procedures are 'scrotalisation' of the penis, in which the penis appears to rise from the scrotum instead of the abdominal wall, unsightly scarring, necrosis and loss of the skin used in the graft, and a dramatic change in the angle of the erect penis — without the suspensory ligament attached, your penis may point straight out or even down when erect, which can make sex both difficult and uncomfortable. Additional risks of procedures to increase girth include reabsorption of the fat implants or fatty lumps appearing on the penis, when the fat has formed nodules rather than distributing evenly.
How much does penis enlargement cost?
Penile lengthening prices vary from £3000 to £5000, while prices for surgery to increase penis girth costs and £1500- £4500.
