In the age of social media, the internet is rife with DIY treatments – especially when it comes to dentistry.

From apple cider vinegar to hydrogen peroxide, videos are constantly emerging on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

We have listed some of the methods that have surfaced in recent months to explain why at-home 'hacks' should be avoided.

Lemon and baking soda

You may have been told that lemon and baking soda are the magic formula for whitening your teeth. It may indeed remove stains – but it will also destroy your enamel too.

Baking soda is abrasive and lemon juice is acidic. So, consequently, it will also damage the protective layer of your teeth.

Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is the chemical used by dental professionals to bleach teeth.

Several videos have been shared on social media sites showing happy youngsters with shining white smiles after using hydrogen peroxide formulas on their teeth.

In the UK, the concentration of hydrogen peroxide is capped at 6% – but some are using 35% peroxide.

Not only can it damage your enamel and teeth, but can also burn your gums.

Apple cider vinegar

Much like lemon and baking soda formula, apple cider vinegar is another acidic concoction.

But what actually is apple cider vinegar? It is essentially apple juice with added yeast. This turns the sugar into alcohol,

If consumed, it can be a major contributor to tooth decay.

Moral of the story? Visit a registered dentist or dental hygienist for all of your tooth whitening needs.
