True or false? 5 common myths about Botox and facial injectables debunked

A desire to look younger is making facial injectables more and more popular.

The market is also driven by an increasingly ageing population, a growing demand for minimally invasive procedures, and increasing longevity of the effects of facial injectable products.

Here, cosmetic doctor, ‘London lip queen’ and comparethetreatment.com expert, Rita Rakus, separates fact from fiction on Botox et al…

1. Facial injectables are for the over 40s. There’s no point having this treatment under that age? True or false?
False! Facial injectables are hugely dependent on what the individual wishes to achieve and how they would like to look, as opposed to their age. We have a range of clients who either want very subtle injectables to enhance their facial features or those who have Botox as a precaution because it helps to prevent wrinkles developing later on in life. I would suggest asking your doctor for a lighter dosage of facial injectables if you are under 40 because younger muscles respond much better to this. It is also very important to have an in-depth consultation with your doctor no matter your age to ensure you achieve the results you would like.

2. Botox freezes your face and you can’t make facial expressions. True or false?
Again false! Your doctor should always analyse your face during a consultation and decide on the appropriate number of units to inject. This amount should effectively relax the facial muscles and eliminate frown lines, wrinkles, worry lines and crow’s feet whilst allowing natural facial movement and expressions to be maintained. It is also important to remember that injectables are not permanent and the effects will wear off after approximately four months. Your doctor should fully explain any side effects before you make your decision to undergo the treatment.

3. You can’t get natural lip look with injectables. True or false?
Absolutely false! If done correctly, lip enhancements look natural and beautiful adding gradual improvement to your face with very little downtime and recovery time. It is important to choose a reliable and safe doctor who will be able to advise you on what you need to achieve your desired look. Before a treatment I always spend time in consultation discussing the desired effect and I would also recommend bringing along old photographs of yourself to show your doctor what you would like to achieve from your lip enhancement treatment.

4. You see instant improvements with such treatments. True or false?
This is definitely true. Facial injectables give quick results with very little downtime, and this is one of the reasons why we are seeing more and more people having these treatments, as they are so pleased with the outcome. When our patients have Botox, it normally takes around two weeks to see full results. But at even three to four days, most people will start to notice a difference with the results lasting up to six months. If you have a big event or special occasion coming up, I would book your appointment at least a month before to ensure you are happy with the results.

5. I can ask my beautician to administer injectables. I don’t need to see a clinician. True or false?
False! You should only receive injectables from a qualified and trained professional, such as a doctor. When undergoing a treatment that can have such visible and significant effects, it is important these procedures are being carried out by someone who has proven results and case studies to show you and who has had a lot of experience so you can be assured that you are receiving the best care and result.
