Can I breastfeed after breast implants? What bringing up baby does to our body

For those of us who opt for breast augmentation, breastfeeding is a big consideration in the long term.

And the good news is that recent research finds that opting for breast implants will not put paid to nurturing a baby!

In fact, the percentage of women with breast implant surgery who can breastfeed is ‘exceedingly high’, according to the study.

When comparing 100 feeding mums who had breast implants with 100 without, there was only 6% difference in those who after one month, were feeding their babies – 93% compared to 99% of women respectively.

When it came to the two different types of incision the women had had when the implant was inserted, this too had no impact on their ability to feed.

The researchers, from Argentina, suggest their study reinforces the opinion that changes were rarely needed in breastfeeding due to breast implant surgery.

They said that, for those of us considering breast implants, we do not need to sacrifice breastfeeding in favour of a desire for shapelier breasts.

Their advice is, however, that for mums-to-be with implants, they should speak to health professionals who may wish to monitor feeding once the baby is born.

When it comes to choice of breast implant, volume and incision, a plastic surgeon will always base recommendation on an individual’s personal circumstances but should highlight all other options, too.

They should also base their guidance on up-to-date scientific evidence and not pressure you into making a decision immediately.

For those of us whose breasts have sagged post pregnancy, there is always the option for a breast lift.

Our bodies inevitably change during pregnancy, childbirth and then with breastfeeding and, if those changes that are unwelcome are permanent, they may give us cause for concern or impact on our confidence.

Sometimes, no amount of exercise or dieting will shift those extra fat pockets or perk up our breasts and we can feel less than satisfied with our appearance.

Therefore, other procedures to consider may include a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), to tighten muscles and get rid of excess skin, and liposuction to reshape those ‘love handles’.

The ISAPS Global Survey recently revealed that liposuction is among the world’s most-wanted surgical procedures, followed by breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, nose jobs and tummy tucks.
