My professional career has resulted from a long held passion for the study of dentistry and especially cosmetic enhancement work. Having graduated from Glasgow University with degrees in anatomy (1998) and dental surgery (2000), I attained membership to the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 2004. In 2009 I was awarded entry to Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow without examination.
Currently working in cosmetic and implant reconstructive dentistry, I am based at Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry, a private referral clinic in Glasgow’s west end. I also carry out implant work at a clinic in Edinburgh. In both clinics, I have the support of a full team of dentists and hygienists with whom I work in conjunction.
I have a particular interest in dental implantology, including bone grafting, immediate implant placement and loading together with soft tissue surgery. The use of our in house CBCT scanner allows treatments such as this to be planned and carried out as accurately as possible.
There is no specialism in the field of dental implants - therefore a dentist can’t be called a specialist in dental implants.
Our clinic has a particular focus on dental implants and I have completed years of focused implant training and ongoing personal development in the area to ensure I can offer the best possible standard of patient treatment and care.
My strong commitment to continued education means I travel extensively to train with and learn from globally recognised pioneers and experts of advanced cosmetic and implant techniques. Throughout my year I get involved in implant mentoring and I lecture and co-ordinates courses on the placement and restoration of dental implants.
We are pleased that the name we selected for our clinic - Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry at Hyndland Dental Clinic - was approved by the General Dental Council.
I have been actively involved with the Association of Dental Implantology (ADI) UK since around 2005 when I was elected at that stage as the Scottish committee member. Following this I have become more involved with the ADI having previously held the post of secretary / treasurer and currently holding the office of president elect of the association. My term of presidency runs from November 2013.
I am a member of a number of key professional organisations including the British and American Academies of Cosmetic Dentistry, the ADI, International Team for Implantology (ITI), The PEERS group, Academy of Osseointegration(USA). I am a mentor for the Association of Dental Implantology.
